New Zealand Work Visa for Indians: What the India–New Zealand FTA Changes

Oct 22
4 min read

Has the New Zealand work visa for Indians just become easier to secure? If you are an Indian professional or graduate, the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) may reshape your options, the New Zealand work visa for Indians among them. The agreement came into force on 20 October 2026, opening new work, study and travel routes. This guide splits the changes into what is open now, what starts soon and what is still to come, so you can plan with current facts.

Quick answer (updated October 2026): The India–New Zealand FTA came into force on 20 October 2026. Two new work pathways allow up to 5,000 people in New Zealand at any one time, for up to three years, with no direct route to residence. A working holiday visa is due within two years.

What the India–New Zealand FTA changes for visas

The India–New Zealand FTA is mainly a trade deal, but it also sets out visa commitments across three areas: work, study and a future working holiday scheme.

On work, two new Temporary Employment Entry pathways opened on 20 October 2026 for eligible Indian nationals. On study, Indian students gain clearer in-study and post-study work rights. On travel, a working holiday visa for young Indians is due within two years.

It helps to be clear about the limits. The New Zealand work visa for Indians under these pathways still depends on the usual checks. A job offer from an accredited employer, qualifications, English language, health and character requirements all continue to apply. Nothing is automatic, and the agreement does not remove the need to meet immigration rules. Treat the figures and categories below as a guide, and confirm them against Immigration New Zealand before you apply.

New Zealand work visa for Indians: the new TEE pathways

Two Temporary Employment Entry visas sit at the centre of this route, both open from 20 October 2026. The India Skilled Work Visa covers highly skilled roles, with most places set aside for occupations on the New Zealand Green List. The India Iconic Work Visa covers a small set of culturally significant Indian occupations, such as yoga instructors, chefs, music teachers and Ayush practitioners. For the first time, this opens a New Zealand visa for Indian chefs and similar roles.

Together the two visas are capped at 5,000 holders at any one time, reported as roughly 4,400 skilled places and 600 iconic places. Both allow stays of up to three years and do not lead directly to residence. Standard requirements apply: a job offer from an accredited employer, qualifications, English language, health and character. For help with the employment visa route, speak to Visa Roots.

The agreement also covers other business routes, including intra-company transfers, contractual service suppliers and business visitors, each with its own permitted stay. Confirm the current stay limits on Immigration New Zealand.

Students and graduates: post-study and in-study work rights

The agreement strengthens two things for students: work during study and work after it.

For work after study, the post-study work visa New Zealand offers to doctoral graduates extends to up to four years, rather than three. Official New Zealand analysis records this as an extra year under the agreement, and it applies from 16 November 2026.

For work during study, the picture has two parts. Under current New Zealand rules, eligible international students can work up to 25 hours a week during the semester, a domestic change that took effect on 3 November 2025. Separately, the India–New Zealand FTA commits to a floor of at least 20 hours a week for Indian students, so these New Zealand student work hours hold even if the general settings change later. Check your own visa conditions, as some students on older 20-hour conditions need to apply for a variation. Our study visa guidance explains the options.

New Zealand working holiday visa for Indians: what is confirmed

The New Zealand working holiday visa for Indians is the headline travel measure, but it is not open yet. Under the agreement, New Zealand will set up a working holiday arrangement for Indian citizens within two years of the FTA coming into force.

What is confirmed so far is limited. The scheme is expected to cover Indian citizens aged 18 to 30, with up to 1,000 places a year, and reports describe stays of up to 12 months. These details come from the side letter to the agreement rather than live visa instructions, so they may change. For a sense of how such schemes work in practice, see our guide to the Australia work and holiday visa.

What is not set matters just as much. Applications for the New Zealand working holiday visa for Indians are not open, and no start date has been fixed. Immigration New Zealand will publish the rules, the cap and the application process when the scheme launches. Until then, treat any figure as provisional.

Frequently asked questions

Can Indians apply for the new work visas now?

Yes. The two Temporary Employment Entry pathways opened on 20 October 2026. To apply, you need a job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer, along with the usual qualifications, English language, health and character checks.

Does the TEE visa lead to residence?

No. The India Skilled Work Visa and the India Iconic Work Visa allow stays of up to three years, but they do not provide a direct pathway to residence. To stay longer, you would need to move to another visa category.

Can Indian students work in New Zealand?

Yes. Under current rules, eligible students can work up to 25 hours a week during the semester. The India–New Zealand FTA also commits to a minimum of 20 hours a week for Indian students if the settings change.

The bottom line

The India–New Zealand FTA opens real new options, but the rules have not changed overnight. The New Zealand work visa for Indians still rests on a job offer and the standard checks, the post-study gains favour PhD graduates, and the working holiday route is still to come. New options, same rules: verify every detail before you apply, and steer clear of the common visa mistakes.
