How Soon Can You Apply for a UK Dependant Visa After Marriage?

You have just got married, or your wedding is close, and your partner holds, or is about to apply for, a Health and Care Worker visa. How soon can you apply for a UK dependant visa after marriage? GOV.UK’s Health and Care Worker guidance on partners and children does not set a minimum wait after the wedding. What matters is where you apply from, when you apply and whether you can prove your relationship. This guide covers all three.

Quick answer (updated October 2026): GOV.UK’s Health and Care Worker guidance mentions no minimum wait for a UK dependant visa after marriage. From outside the UK, your spouse must apply before travelling. From inside the UK, they apply with the main applicant or before their current visa expires. The relationship must be proven, and the marriage recognised in the UK.

UK dependant visa after marriage on the Health and Care Worker route: when can your spouse apply?

GOV.UK says a dependant partner is your husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner. On the Health and Care Worker route, you must prove one of three things:

  • You are in a marriage or civil partnership that is recognised in the UK.

  • You have been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply.

  • You have been in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply but cannot live together, for example because of work, study or cultural reasons.

GOV.UK asks for evidence of your relationship when you apply, and it lists no waiting period after the wedding.

UK dependant visa from India or inside the UK: how to apply as a Health and Care Worker dependant

From outside the UK, including India. Each family member makes a separate application, pays their own fee and must apply before travelling to the UK. They need the main applicant’s application number, and can enter a family linking code if one was issued. GOV.UK says they usually get a decision within 3 weeks.

From inside the UK. A partner extends or switches with the main applicant or at any time before their current visa expires. Their visa does not extend automatically. GOV.UK says some people cannot switch, including those on a visit visa, a short-term student visa, a seasonal worker visa or immigration bail. The usual decision time is 8 weeks. Your spouse must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until they get a decision, or the application is withdrawn.

A successful dependant’s visa usually ends on the same date as the main applicant’s.

Who cannot bring family on the Health and Care Worker visa

GOV.UK says care workers and senior care workers can bring a partner and children only if one of these is true:

  • They have been continually employed in the UK in that role, on a Health and Care Worker or Skilled Worker visa, since before 11 March 2024.

  • They are applying for a child born in the UK.

  • They are the only living parent responsible for the child and apply for the child to stay in the UK.

  • The child’s other parent is also sponsored as a care worker or senior care worker, and they apply for the child to stay in the UK.

For other ‘medium skilled’ jobs, a similar rule applies, with a cut-off of 22 July 2025. GOV.UK’s job guidance lists care worker (6135) and senior care worker (6136) codes only for extending, updating or switching, so check your occupation code first.

Frequently asked questions

Can my spouse apply before I travel to the UK?

From outside the UK, your spouse must apply before they travel. They need your application number, which you get when you apply.

How long does a Health and Care Worker dependant visa last?

Usually until the same date as the main applicant’s visa. If a child’s parents’ visas end on different dates, the child’s visa ends on the earlier date.

Does my spouse need a separate application?

From outside the UK, yes. Each family member applies separately and pays the fee. From inside the UK, the application form tells you whether they can be included.

Conclusion

GOV.UK’s Health and Care Worker guidance mentions no waiting period for a UK dependant visa after marriage, so the real work is timing, proof and the right route. Keep your relationship evidence ready, and confirm every detail on GOV.UK.
