The UK is undergoing a major transformation in the way visas and travel permissions are issued and checked. As part of its move towards a fully digital immigration system, the UK government is replacing physical visa documents with e-Visas and Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs). These changes will affect how travellers apply, travel, and prove their immigration status.

Here’s a clear breakdown of what’s changing and how you can prepare.
What is the UK e-Visa System?
The e-Visa is a digital record of your immigration status, linked securely to your passport and held online. Instead of relying on physical documents such as visa stickers or biometric residence permits, travellers will use their online UKVI account to prove their right to enter, live, or work in the UK.
This shift is designed to make the system more secure, efficient, and convenient for travellers and employers alike.
Key Changes You Need to Be Aware Of
1. A 100% Digital Travel System
The UK is moving towards a fully digital border system. This means:
Travellers must hold either an e-Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Paper-based visa documents will no longer be accepted for travel to the UK
2. No Passport Submission for Visa Applications
From 26 February 2026, a major procedural change comes into effect:
You will no longer need to submit your passport after attending your Visa Application Centre (VAC) appointment
This applies even to visit visa applicants, allowing you to keep your passport while your application is being processed
3. No More Visa Stickers
Physical visa vignettes are being phased out:
UK visa decisions will be communicated by email only
No visa stickers will be placed in passports
Your immigration status will instead be confirmed through your online e-Visa account
4. Your Passport and e-Visa Must Match
Accuracy is crucial under the new system:
The passport details linked to your e-Visa must exactly match the passport you use to travel
If you renew or change your passport, you must update your e-Visa account before travelling
Failure to do so could result in delays or refusal to board.
5. Share Codes Are Mandatory for Travel
Under the digital system:
Airlines will verify your immigration status using a share code
You must provide this share code, along with your e-Visa, before boarding your flight to the UK
This replaces the need to show physical visa documents at check-in.
What Does This Mean for Travellers and Visa Holders?
The move to e-Visas simplifies many aspects of travel and immigration compliance, but it also places greater responsibility on travellers to:
Keep their UKVI account up to date
Ensure passport details are correct
Understand how to generate and share their share code
Being unprepared could lead to travel disruption, even if your visa is valid.
Prepare Early for a Smooth Transition
The UK’s move to e-Visas marks a significant step towards a modern, digital immigration system. While the changes aim to make travel easier and more secure, understanding the new requirements is essential to avoid last-minute issues.
If you are planning to travel, study, work, or settle in the UK, now is the time to familiarise yourself with the e-Visa system and ensure your details are in order.
