The India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) provides a unique opportunity for young Indian nationals to live, work and study in the UK for up to two years. It’s part of the UK‑India Migration and Mobility Partnership, designed to foster greater cooperation and global mobility between the two countries.

What Is the YPS?
The YPS is a reciprocal mobility programme between the UK and India. Eligible Indian citizens can apply to the UK ballot to secure a limited number of places that allow them to travel to the UK to pursue work, study, travel and other experiences for up to 24 months. A similar scheme exists for UK citizens wishing to live and work in India, though that programme does not use a ballot system.
Unlike regular work or study visas, the YPS is ballot‑based, meaning that applicants enter a random draw, and only those selected are invited to apply for the visa.
2026 Ballot Dates and How It Works
In 2026, the UK Home Office announced that the YPS ballot period is going to run from 2:30 PM (IST) on 17 February 2026 to 2:30 PM (IST) on 19 February 2026. During this time, eligible Indian nationals can submit their ballot entry online.
Key Points of the Ballot System
Free to enter: Entry into the YPS ballot does not cost anything.
Random selection: Successful entries are chosen at random from all eligible submissions.
Single entry: Each applicant can submit only one ballot entry per ballot period.
Visa invitation: If selected, you will receive an email invitation to apply for the YPS visa. You then have 90 days to:
complete your online application,
pay the visa fee and immigration health surcharge, and
Provide biometric information.
Unsuccessful applicants can enter future ballots, provided they still meet the eligibility criteria.
Eligibility Requirements
Before entering the ballot, applicants must ensure they meet the eligibility criteria for the India Young Professionals Scheme visa.
The main requirements are:
Be an Indian citizen
Be aged 18–30 years at the time of travel to the UK
Hold an eligible qualification
Have at least £2,530 in savings to support yourself during your stay in the UK
Meeting eligibility doesn’t guarantee a successful ballot outcome, but it allows you to participate in the draw and, if selected, proceed with your visa application.
Once You’re Selected:
Selection in the ballot is the first key milestone, but it’s not the final visa grant. After being chosen:
You will receive an email invitation to apply for the YPS visa.
You have 90 days to complete your application, pay mandatory fees, and provide biometric details.
Once approved, you can travel to the UK and stay for up to two years.
Within this visa period, you can work in most jobs, study, and even be self‑employed (subject to certain conditions). However, you cannot extend the stay beyond two years under the scheme, nor bring dependants as part of your application.
Why the India Young Professionals Scheme Matters
The India Young Professionals Scheme provides a short‑term pathway that is simpler and faster than many other UK immigration routes. It gives young Indian professionals valuable international exposure in a global labour market, helping them build experience, skills and networks. It also reinforces the ongoing strategic relationship between the UK and India on mobility and labour movement.
Navigating the India Young Professionals Scheme can be challenging, from confirming eligibility and submitting your ballot entry on time to completing all post-selection requirements.
